Let me walk through what the research predicts at 30 percent AI literacy among employable Black workers in Southern Dallas County.
Wage growth, bottom up. Conservative estimates show a 14.4 percent wage increase for workers who gain AI proficiency. On a baseline income of $43,632 — the median for Black workers in the region — that's an additional $6,283 per worker per year. Moderate estimates put the gain at 30 percent. Optimistic estimates, based on PwC's finding across one billion job ads, show a 56 percent premium.
Job creation ripples outward. Every new tech job creates 4.4 additional positions in local service sectors. This isn't a theory — it's been measured across U.S. metro areas for decades. The restaurants, daycares, clinics, and retail stores that surround a growing tech hub grow with it. The multiplier is real.
Entrepreneurship compounds. A 10 percent increase in Black business ownership increases average Black wealth by $50,000 and reduces the racial wealth gap by about 9.5 percent. AI tools lower the barrier to starting a business — they handle the bookkeeping, the marketing copy, the scheduling, the customer follow-up that used to require hiring staff or learning complex software.
The Secondary Effects Matter More
This is the part that doesn't make it into the headlines. The economic data is compelling, but the community-level effects are where the real transformation happens.
Youth workforce development programs that include AI training have been shown to reduce violent crime arrests by up to 45 percent. That's not a correlation. That's a causal effect measured across multiple program evaluations.
Jobs with AI training for formerly incarcerated individuals correlate with a 40 percent lower rearrest rate. Stable income + marketable skills + a career trajectory = dramatically different life outcomes.
Community violence intervention programs paired with economic opportunity reduce violence-related arrests by up to 73 percent. The combination of purpose and paycheck changes behavior at scale.

Twenty-four percent of Black workers are in roles with more than 75 percent automation potential — the highest exposure of any demographic group. Twenty-nine thousand to 35,000 Black workers in Southern Dallas zip codes face significant AI displacement risk. The 4.5 million Black-held jobs nationally that are most vulnerable to automation are disproportionately in logistics, customer service, and administrative support — precisely the sectors Southern Dallas relies on.
The Inland Port alone employs 30,000 people in roles that are being automated right now, not next decade. The window for retraining is measured in months, not years.
As McKinsey put it: "It can be the great leveler, but it can exacerbate the gap as well. At the end of the day, the wealth gap isn't going to close itself without intervention."
The Math That Keeps Me Going
I do the math a lot. If 30 percent of Southern Dallas's employable Black workers gain AI proficiency, at the conservative end it's a $6,283 per person annual raise. That's real money. That's a car payment. That's a semester of community college. That's breathing room.
But the real number I care about is the tipping point itself. At 25 to 27 percent adoption, the dynamic shifts. It stops being "those AI people" and starts being "everybody." Kids start learning from parents. Coworkers start teaching each other. The barrier to entry drops because the community's collective knowledge rises.
That's the goal. Not to make every single person an AI expert. To hit the tipping point where the community teaches itself.
